The Afghanistan Refugee Rescue Organization (ARRO) traces its roots to civil and social initiatives that began in Afghanistan in 2015 under the name Organization of Youth for Peace (OYP). These efforts focused on social peace, youth civic engagement, and community-based programs within Afghanistan. Following the collapse of the Republic of Afghanistan, the dismantling of democratic institutions, and the takeover by the Taliban, the space for social-service activities was completely shut down. As a result, the organization’s work was forcibly suspended, and members of its leadership were compelled to leave Afghanistan.

After a period of pause and reassessment, former members of the organization’s leadership—responding to the widespread migration crisis and emerging needs of the Afghan community—decided to resume their work in a new form adapted to the changed reality. Accordingly, the organization was officially re-established in Brazil in January 2023 under the name Afghanistan Refugee Rescue Organization (ARRO), with a focus on helping Afghan immigrants resettle in their new communities, connect with one another and their new neighbors, and celebrate their Afghan culture.

ARRO’s United States office was founded in Reston, Virginia in 2024. It now serves as ARRO’s active presence in North America, leveraging the resources and partnerships available in the US to expand services, advocacy, and global cooperation in support of the Afghan people.
